Get Involved
We are excited to announce our upcoming Heritage Lottery-funded project, "The Gypsies and Travellers of Dorset." This initiative aims to preserve and celebrate the rich history, culture, and experiences of Gypsies and Travellers in the region—ensuring that their stories are documented and remembered for future generations.
How You Can Participate
We will be holding a series of small meet-ups throughout the year, where Gypsy and Traveller community members are invited to:
- Share Stories – Personal experiences, family histories, and traditions passed down through generations.
- Bring Photographs & Memorabilia – Old photographs, documents, or artefacts that help tell the story of Dorset’s Gypsy and Traveller heritage.
- Record Oral Histories – For those who prefer speaking to writing, we’ll provide opportunities to record conversations and memories.
Why This Matters
Many aspects of Gypsy and Traveller history remain undocumented or misunderstood. By collecting and preserving these stories, we ensure that our descendants—as well as researchers, educators, and the wider public—can learn about the true heritage and contributions of Dorset’s Gypsy and Traveller communities. All gathered materials will be carefully archived in the Dorset History Centre, creating a valuable resource for future generations.
